The Maltese frige

A couple of shots of Smartlynx Malta A320 9H-SLA, departing from runway 23...
It's a white frige but maltese registrations are quite rare around here...
(Still didn't go to the airport just for this one...)

Photo of the Week: Tuifly

This week's photo is dedicated to Tuifly...a long time flyer to Madeira.

When I stared photographing planes more seriously, back in 2004 they were already flying to Madeira, as Hapag-Lloyd...not long after, were rebranded as Hapagfly, before turning into Tuifly.
It's a long time flying to Madeira and they must be the airline that brought us more special liveries than any other...

Last Tuesday, there were 6 Tuifly flights...not a bad number...for the photo of the week, this double pic of B738's D-ABKA, a former Air Berlin plane and D-ATUI, with Robinson special livery.

Pintura Especial Bisontes: 80k Horas!

100 Years of KLM

KLM colors at Madeira (PH-HZM, on service with Transavia but still with KLM colors was, in August 2006, the only time I saw the dutch airline colors around here)

KLM Celebrates today its 100 aniversary, becaming the first airline to operate under the original name for more than 100 years. Congratulations!

Originaly tough to be named as Dutch Airlines, it received by the Queen the Honor to carry the name "Royal" (Koninklijke), so becaming Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij (Royal Company of Aviation)...well...let's just stick to the KLM :) :)

In Portugal,, the KLM is part of one of World War II little misteries:
When the Nederland was invaded by the germans, some of the KLM planes outside the country went to England and the Dutch Goverment in exile / British authorities decided to put them to use (and its crews) with BOAC.

In June, 1st 1943, the flight KLM/BOAC 777 departed from Lisbon to Withchurch (near Bristol) but never managed to reach its destiny...was shot down by German Ju-88's over the Bay of Biscay.
On board, was the then famous actor Leslie Howard which still today remains the origin of many theories...usually unharmed, why was this civil flight shot down?
Some say it was because Leslie Howard's agent looked just about the same as Winston Churchil with his "strong" body and smoking cigars, some say, Leslie was an allied agent that had been collecting info in Portugal and Spain on the cover of some conferences...anyway..I guess we'll never know...

Happy Birthday KLM!

Travel Service 900

A few shots of the landing of Travel Service B739 OK-TSI on Madeira's runway 05.
Was a windy day but this one only seemed to have more trouble while entering the long final, just after GELO.
Despite some crossed wind the struggling wasn't too obvious, like THIS TAP

Photo of the Week: Sunny Cars Livery

Time for a new photo of the week...almost at the end of summers season (probably not long for this one to return to Canada) finally managed to make a few shots on this great livery.

Leased to Sunwing Airlines by TUI Nederlands, B738 C-FDBD is carrying the Sunny Cars livery, which looks really nice and colorful. Allways a great catch!

Seen here arriving from Amsterdam, about to land on runway 05

Thomas Cook down

As already expected, Thomas Cook went down...unfurtunatelly they didn't managed to get the required funding and shut down the operations...

Regarding the airlines of the group, Thomas Cook UK was also shutdown and Thomas Cook Scandinavia has suspended operations...some still say there's a probability that the Scandinavian airline will resume activity...I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Condor, a major airline flying to Madeira, for now as kept flying, and annouced it was seeking a government-backed bridging loan to preserve liquidity after the collapse of associated tour operator Thomas Cook...let's hope that works out...

Regarding Thomas Cook Balearics..it looks like it's still flying also, for now...
